. . . a genealogy & historical society for Yuba County, California
RESEARCH ADVISORY COMMITTEE aka "Ramey Research Team" Transcribers/typists needed. If you are interested in helping, please contact us: yubaroots@gmail.com Mr. Earl Ramey - researcher, historian, author, to name a few - left a priceless legacy in his work. Among many other things, he was instrumental in compiling and coordinating what is now known as the "Ramey Index" in the California Room of the Yuba County Library. This index was compiled on small cards (with notations under the headings) for many of the holdings in the California Room covering 1850-1950. He and his team worked under extremely challenging conditions at times to make this resource available to the public. They read through the books, newspapers, City Council minutes, and other documents recording headings and names, citing source of information. Without his tireless efforts much of the information in the California Room would not be found - or not as easily! It is because of this work that countless people have been assisted in their research long after Mr. Ramey left this earth. In honor of this selfless man and his dedication to the preservation and increased access to genealogical and historical data, we wish to continue on with his work in the California Room, and bring it into the 21st century.

In April of 2007, YubaRoots made a proposal to the Yuba County Library Director, outlining very specific needs, issues and concerns regarding the California Room at the library. Our document was based on thousands of hours volunteering in the California Room, and direct hands-on experience. Our organization offered to assist in implementation and organization of these goals, and to facilitate some necessary changes by enlisting the help of a broad section of volunteers from the community. The proposal resulted in many positive alterations in policy that were long overdue. Since 2007, modifications to the library policies have begun to occur in relation to the accountability and performance of the library staff, and much-needed change has been implemented in regard to public access and protection of the collection. We are grateful to Loren MccRory, Director, and Regina Zurakowski, Research Librarian, and the Yuba County Board of Supervisors, in taking action to support our proposal. Along with some very specific suggestions to improve security to the California Room, the following suggestions were also made: The research committee will also seek out other sources of historical and genealogical information in need of preservation and make every effort to provide this data to the public using a variety of means. We will endeavor to work with other agencies, organizations and individuals for access to information. In all efforts, we will strive to make resources available to the public for their genealogical and historical research. Volunteers will be an integral part of reaching these objectives. If you are interested in helping on this committee, please contact us by mail or email.

"Time and accident are committing daily havoc on the originals deposited in our public offices...the lost cannot be recovered, but let us save what remains; not by vaults and locks which fence them from the public eye and use...but by such as multiplication of copies, as shall be place them beyond the reach of accident." Thomas Jefferson, 1791
